Our journey began in the dynamic world of beverages, focusing on tea and coffee, where we gained invaluable experience. However, the allure of chocolate led us on a new path of discovery. Thai chocolate, with its rich potential, captivated us and inspired deeper exploration. This journey gave birth to Rila Kakao , proudly originating from Ubon Ratchathani. Motivated by the agricultural promise of cocoa in Thailand, we are committed to cultivating it sustainably. Together, we aim to learn, grow, and share the unique flavors of Thai chocolate with the world.
Rila Kakao: The Award-Winning Chocolate Brand That Started with Curiosity
From Ubon Ratchathani, to the world — one bar at a time
Some of the best things are born from not knowing something and deciding to find out anyway.
That's where Rila Kakao began. Based in Ubon Ratchathani in northeastern Thailand, this craft chocolate brand started from a simple observation: the team already knew the world of specialty beverages — tea, coffee, the culture around them, the language, the depth of information available. But chocolate? That was genuinely new territory.
And new territory, it turns out, was exactly what they were looking for.
Why Chocolate?
The team behind Rila came from the drinks world. They knew what it meant to trace a cup back to its origin — the soil, the altitude, the processing method, the farmer's hands. When they turned that same lens onto cacao, they found something fascinating.
Thai cacao, unlike Thai coffee (which has a long established industry), is still early. There's less documentation, fewer established paths, more room to explore and shape what it means. That was the draw.
"We can study it from the very beginning — from growing, to processing, to the final product. Thai cacao still has so much potential. We want to grow alongside the farmers, learning and developing together, sustainably."
Multiple Origins, Multiple Characters
Rila Kakao makes single-origin bars — each one from a different Thai region, each tasting distinctly different:
🍫 Ubon Ratchathani 65% — from the northeast, where Rila's roots are 🍫 Chiang Mai 70% — northern cacao with its own character 🍫 Nakhon Si 82% — bold and deep, from the south
Three regions. Three very different flavour profiles. That's the whole point of single-origin: you're not just eating chocolate, you're tasting a specific place.
International Recognition
Rila Kakao has already picked up multiple international awards — which says something significant. The world is noticing Thai craft chocolate, and Rila is one of the producers helping put it on the map.
